SAFphyre is part of a wider community of Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking projects advancing solid oxide electrolysis and clean fuel technologies.

OUTFOX (Optimized Up-scaled Technology for next-generation solid OXide electrolysis) is a Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking project advancing solid oxide electrolysis (SOEL) toward industrial-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen production. Where SAFphyre focuses on co-electrolysis for sustainable aviation fuel, OUTFOX addresses the upstream challenge of scaling solid oxide cell and stack manufacturing for pure hydrogen production.

Objectives

  • Scale up solid oxide electrolysis cells to geometric areas of up to 900 cm², compatible with high-volume manufacturing techniques.
  • Achieve current densities of at least 0.85 A/cm² using cells 25% thinner than current state-of-the-art designs.
  • Validate performance and durability across two testing campaigns totalling more than 4,000 hours of operation.
  • Demonstrate a scaled-up SOEL module at 80 kW, preparing the technology for deployment in 100 MW-scale industrial systems.
